Well, best laid plans! We left at 7 am, not 5 am, and then we got stuck in major traffic in St. Louis! putting us behind schedule from the start! Saw the arch on the drive through, and somewhere along the Missouri River, I realized that we were not going to make it all the way to South Dakota the first day. After much searching, and googling, found a likely campground in a small town in Iowa and we headed that way. That's when we decided we needed gas, and saw a small camp sign at the exit. Got gas, found the campground to be abandoned and headed back for the Interstate, and saw a sign to Big River State Park. Found our way there and saw that the entire area had been flooded - in fact, the campground just opened for the labor day holiday.
ApparentlyLewis and Clark had camped nearby, and there is something about an oxbow that makes the lake big, but it is very Missouri and very nice.
Anyway - we had a great night - Missourians (at least at BigLake) are very friendly and boisterous!
Oh and get this - the state park has a "lounge" full bar - happy hour, big party area and place for boaters to pull up and party/eat make merry!
Oh and also get this - we get lots of thumbs up from fellow travelers, pointing, laughing waving, even folks taking our picture while driving by! It is hilarious.
